Renesse, a favourite holiday destination
Never heard of Renesse? This popular seaside village, with the gothic-style Jacobuskerk at its centre, is a lively resort which is just bursting with energy in the summer. Although Renesse caters for large numbers of tourist visitors, you can still find peace and quiet on its expansive beaches and in the dunes.
Thanks to its proximity to the beaches and dunes, Renesse has developed into a highly popular holiday destination for both young and old. As such, there is ample accommodation in the village. If you like the outdoors, there are beaches and woodlands aplenty. Renesse has a 17-kilometre-long beach and inland it is fringed by the Westenschouwen forest. The beaches are amongst the cleanest in the Netherlands and are divided into family beaches, water sports beaches and wild beaches.
One other bonus: on the edge of Renesse is the Transferium, with no fewer than 900 free car-parking spaces. From 15 May to 15 September, the Transferium functions as a park & ride for the beaches, village or campsites. In Renesse, you don’t have to worry about expensive parking charges.

What to do in Renesse
Straô and other events
Have you ever wanted to see a group of workhorses ride the waves at a gallop? This is possible at the annual Straô celebrations. This event is a ‘living tradition’ and is unique to the west coast of Schouwen. How about taking part in an event yourself? Why not do the Fjoertoer? This is an annual event consisting of a nighttime walk along the foreshore and through the woods, passing a number of illuminations along the way. It’s quite a spectacle!

Seal spotting
The village has a particular association with seals. Seals can regularly be seen basking on the sandbanks along this part of the coast. Seals which have recovered in the Pieterburen seal sanctuary in the north of the country are often released on Renesse’s beaches. This is a spectacle not to be missed!
