Vlissingen

Vlissingen is the perfect place to combine a city break with a beach holiday. Take a stroll along the Netherlands’ longest prom, spend your evenings on the beach, engross yourself in the history of the Vlissingen, or shop in its many charming shops and boutiques. Discover the all-in-one city!

Vlissingen, an uncompromising seaport

Vlissingen is situated at the mouth of the Westerschelde and is a port city to the core. You can almost touch the passing ships. Because of its location, Vlissingen became increasingly important in the 17th century, trade flourished and sea-admiral Michiel de Ruyter gained his reputation here. To get to know Vlissingen and the maritime history of Zeeland up close, a visit to the MuZEEum is a must.

Vlissingen has since transformed itself into a modern, yet uncompromising port city. Its industrial heritage has undergone regeneration and become a contemporary attraction. Take the Scheldekwartier for example, where you can walk along the harbourfront with its lavish yachts and other sea-going vessels. Or visit the Lasloods, an old factory, which today hosts various events. There’s certainly something here for everyone! Check out the events calendar for all the events in Vlissingen.

What to do in Vlissingen

The longest promenade in the Netherlands

Vlissingen’s seafront was given a major facelift in the 1990s. The whole promenade is home to many fine restaurants and pavement cafes which have magnificent views out to sea. To make the picture complete, then rest awhile at the Pier 7 beach pavilion and enjoy delicious fresh food with your feet in the sand, or dine at a unique location such as in the Gevangentoren, an old prison tower. The promenade is also perfect place for a bracing stroll or bike ride: cars must give way here!

Cinecity

Many film buffs can be found in Vlissingen, since the city has the largest cinema in Zeeland: Cinecity. It is a modern cinema with 7 theatres and, of course, screens all the latest releases. In addition to all the showings at Cinecity, Vlissingen also hosts the international ‘Film by the Sea’ festival. This is one of Zeeland’s foremost cultural happenings. The unique location by the sea and its eye-catching programme mean that Film by the Sea is quite a celebration every year.

The art route

Vlissingen is a protected historic town: its centre alone is home to around 300 listed monuments. In addition, there are many works of art in its public spaces. The art route takes you past many of these curiosities in and around the port city. In addition to the art route, there are of course many cycle trails in and around Vlissingen!
