5 things you absolutely need to know as a newcomer to Zeeland

If you’ve just arrived in Zeeland or are planning to move to our beautiful region, this article is definitely worth a read. It tells you about the five things you need to know as a newcomer to Zeeland, so that you’re fully prepared to embrace our unique way of life and settle into your new home.

1. People from Zeeland are stingy

Zeelanders are famous for being tight-fisted. That reputation is rooted in history, and it’s more to do with being frugal than anything else. Many people don’t know that Zeeland was a relatively poor region for quite some time – for the simple reason that most of it was cut off from the mainland.

For instance, the island of Schouwen-Duiveland was only connected to the rest of the country in the 1960s. Before that, all goods arriving on the island had to be transported by boat, and cars and lorries could only reach it by ferry. This had huge effects on local culture and things like architecture, as people had to use whatever materials were available.

So, rather than being stingy, Zeelanders are actually very good at repurposing what they have. We use new materials in novels ways and have a knack of finding more efficient solutions in water management, farming, sustainable construction and other sectors like healthcare. That’s why the province is now home to hundreds of pioneering companies. like Vitro Plus, de Mariahoeve, Kingfish, Q-Aviation and UC360.

2. Life in Zeeland is laid-back

In Zeeland, there’s no need to rush. People here take life as it comes. Is it because of our healthy sea air? Our status as the country’s sunniest province? Or working outdoors? Whatever the reason may be, Zeelanders are what you’d call ‘down to earth’. We’re honest, perhaps a little blunt, but also friendly and genuine. Once you’ve made a friend, you’re always welcome to pop round for a cup of coffee or strike up a chat whenever you cross paths: whether that’s in the supermarket, around town or queuing in the shop.

Zeelanders appreciate the value of community and connection. Neighbours support each other and people help others in need, even if they’re struggling themselves. Zeelanders are loyal to their communities, and shopping locally is one way of supporting them. That’s why Zeeland’s towns and cities are home to a relatively large number of independent shops that have genuine connections with their customers, providing an excellent service at affordable prices.

You won’t find any pushy sales tactics or in-your-face marketing, but people who get the job done without making a fuss. That’s how things work around here.

3. Zeeland strikes the perfect balance

Zeeland is often seen as an empty expanse on the edge of the country. But for us, that’s a blessing. We enjoy the peace and quiet of our landscape. You won’t find any busy motorways, traffic jams or noisy neighbours – apart from the sound of farmers tending to their fields.

One day in the big city gives you a greater appreciation of Zeeland’s gentle rhythm on your return. There really is no place like home, watching those high-rises and busy crowds turn into stunning views, tranquil waters, warm sunshine and peaceful silence. Taking is easy is what we do best. But we enjoy picking up the pace when the moment feels right. Whether that’s an afternoon of water sports, drinks at the beach, a delicious lunch at the harbour or meeting friends at the pub – with or without live music. We always find something that suits us.

4. We value our free time

Zeelanders have a strong work ethic. But they also know when enough is enough. There’s a time to roll up your sleeves, and there’s a time to relax.

We value our free time and enjoy spending it with friends and family. And living in the ‘land in sea’, we also love being outside. Whether that’s going out for drinks or being active in the great outdoors. From mountain-biking in the dunes or sailing or surfing – it’s all on our doorstep. The water is never far away. And with so many restaurants (many specialising in fish dishes), cafés, beach pavilions and sandwich shops, there are plenty of opportunities to refuel when you need to. We eat seasonally, using natural produce sourced straight from the sea or our fertile clay soils.

When the sun sets, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy a night-out or event. Festivals, concerts and events take place nearly every weekend in both low and high season. From Concert at SEA to Beachboom, DAM-X, Vestrock, Zeeland Kustmarathon, the Zeeuws Nazomer Festival, Film by the Sea – and plenty more. We’re always up for a good time.

5. We cherish our heritage

People in Zeeland are proud of their roots and are very attached to their way of life. Every generation is keen to uphold our local culture and fantastic traditions, be that fishing and mussel festivals, Straô, the Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships or ‘ring riding’. * Join one of these events, and you may just find yourself coming back for more next year!

In terms of character, Zeelanders have a reputation for being cold, distant and wary. But scratch the surface, and you’ll find a friendly bunch who are ready to help you out no matter what. Whether that’s your new neighbour, colleague or local shopkeeper. Many newcomers say how welcome they’re made to feel and how they’re able to make genuine connections with locals. People will find the time to catch up with you over a coffee. It’s what makes Zeeland, Zeeland. Embrace that laid-back lifestyle and enjoy the moment!
