Kwistenburg: nature reserve and carpet shells

About this location
From the sea dike near Wolphaartsdijk you look into the Kwistenburg brackish grassland outside the dike. The area recalls a time when tides still had free rein here.
In summer the dike turns purple-blue with flowering verbena. For birds Kwistenburg is a refuge: waders on the mudflats, meadow birds in the grass, and in winter thousands of wigeons and geese.
On a sandbar, avocets, common terns and Arctic terns breed. The area is closed to the public, but binoculars from the dike always reveal something.
