Hulst

Hulst

Hulst is one of the few fortified towns in the Netherlands which has withstood the test of time. This, along with its gastronomic highlights and its Gallic-like bonhomie, marks Hulst out as a tourist hot-spot. Read more about it here!

Hulst’s illustrious past

The town can look back on a rich past. As you walk through its streets, the evidence is still very clear today, with its 68 listed buildings, its defensive walls, its stately town hall and the St Willibrordus basilica. There are constant other reminders of this heritage throughout the town, including the tale of Reynard the Fox. Near to the Gentse Poort (or ‘Ghent Gate’) you can find a bronze statue of Reynard. Curious to know more about this story? You can find out more by visiting Hulst’s local museum!

What to do in Hulst

Gastronomic Hulst

Hulst is known for a bonhomie more easily associated with our southern neighbours. Hardly surprising, since the Belgian border is just a stone’s throw away. Hulst is a town for foodies and bon viveurs. The centre of town has a whole host of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a scrumptious breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can also sample a tipple or two at the town’s Vermeersen brewery which organises tours of the site.

The Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe

Close to Hulst is the nature reserve of the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe (literally the ‘drowned land of Saeftinghe’). With its salt marshes, this nature reserve is the largest of its kind in Europe. A visit to the area will give you a good idea of how nature responds to the rhythm of the tides, the influence of the sea and the Schelde river. Would you rather see some of the countryside closer to Hulst? Check out the hiking trails along its water defences and creeks.

Vestrock and other events

Hulst is renowned for the numerous events it hosts every year. In the space of just a few years, the annual Vestrock festival has expanded to become a three-day event attracting around 25,000 visitors. Curious to know about other events in Hulst? Check out our events calendar.
