Dike Watchman's House and Tide Pool

On the Oosterscheldeboulevard, about seven kilometres from the Oosterscheldekering, stand two special objects: a dike watchman's house and a tide pool.
The dike watchman's house was built in 1925, long before the Oosterscheldekering existed. The dike watchman kept an eye on the condition of the dike, monitored water levels and inspected the coast, especially during storms. It was an important, but often lonely job: his vigilance protected the people behind the dike. The little house is the only surviving dike watchman's house in Zeeland and now serves as an information point for Oosterschelde National Park.
At the tideline stands a concrete tide pool. At low tide you can look into it; at high tide it fills up. This gives you an impression of underwater life in the Oosterschelde. You can spot algae, seaweed, eelgrass, anemones, mussels and oysters, as well as shrimp, small fish and lugworms.
Where the tide once mainly posed a risk, it is now an important part of experiencing nature.
