Everyone in and around Kapelle knows the fruit stall on the Rijksweg: the strawberry tent of Fruitboerderij Remeeus. Joleen and Wim Remeeus have a location in Kapelle-Biezelinge and one in Ouwerkerk. For this Zilt Zoet Zeeland route we visit the one in Kapelle-Biezelinge, where the strawberries are also grown.
More and more strawberries are no longer grown in open soil but on trellises, also known as gutter cultivation. This allows multiple harvests per year. According to Joleen, this means less water use, better working conditions and a more consistent supply and quality. But above all it is about the taste. From late May to late July, delicious, sweet and juicy strawberries of the Sonata variety are available.
And at Remeeus you get something you will not find in the supermarket: personal contact and time for a chat. Besides strawberries there are also cherries and blackberries, raspberries and blueberries, depending on the season.
