The white Oostmolen in Kloetinge is visible from afar and has been a landmark in the landscape for centuries. As the only mill in the village, it marks not only the edge of Kloetinge, but also the transition between the higher village area and the surrounding agricultural land. Its silhouette is a reminder of a time when wind power was essential for grinding grain and farm life was closely connected to the landscape.
A short distance away lies a high-stem orchard that evokes a very different image. Where modern fruit growing mainly consists of neatly planted low-stem trees focused on efficiency and production, this orchard shows the traditional agricultural landscape. High-stem trees need more space and labour and yield less, but offer more biodiversity and give the landscape an open, almost park-like character.
