On a picturesque spot along the Zomerweg in Kloetinge stands an old Zeeland barn from 1916, originally built for livestock and storage. Today it houses Hoogstrate Groente en Fruit, a family business now in its fifth and sixth generation.
Arianne Hoogstrate proudly explains that fruit goes straight from the orchard into the shop. Apples in no fewer than ten varieties, as well as pears, cherries and plums. They also grow less common varieties such as morello cherries and quinces. Morellos are sour cherries, wonderful for jam and juice. Quinces resemble apples and pears but are harder, known for their distinctive aroma and flavour, for instance in quince jelly.
Arianne makes her own jam and apple juice from much of the fruit. Vegetables and salty Zeeland greens such as samphire and sea lavender are also available, depending on the season.
In addition to fruit and vegetables, the shop offers a wide range of Zeeland regional products. Fruit and gift hampers are also put together here with great care.
