Lock Plateau Wemeldinge

About this location

The lock plateau of Wemeldinge is a place where many small stories come together. At first glance it is a quiet spot at the marina, but those who look more carefully discover art, water history and memories of a lively trading place.

At its centre stands the old lock complex, once an important link in the Canal through Zuid-Beveland. Between 1866 and 1993 ships passed through here and chandlers sold goods from rowing boats to waiting skippers: from food and oil to rope and cleaning supplies. After the canal was rerouted, the lock lost its function and the area became a marina and residential area.

The history is still visible. The old gauge house, once the lock keeper's workplace, shows the water level of the Eastern Scheldt on its clock. It is also the workspace of draughtsman Jan-Willem Hament. The steel artwork 'Het schip' by Eveline van Duyl refers to the former shipping trade. A bronze mermaid by Léon Vermunt also stands in the harbour.

Those who look carefully can still see behind the quiet the rhythm of water and trade.
