The Beet Line through the Zak van Zuid-Beveland

About this location
The Beet Line through the Zak van Zuid-Beveland During the tourist season, you might just encounter a real steam train chugging through the Zak van Zuid-Beveland. First comes the whistle, then a plume of steam, and then the black locomotive with its carriages comes into view. For many locals, it's a nostalgic reminder of days gone by. The railway line from Goes to Hoedekenskerke was once part of the 'Bietenlijntje' — the Beet Line — which transported sugar beets, potatoes, onions and straw. Various sections opened in 1927. As buses took over, most lines closed, but the Goes-Hoedekenskerke section remained in use for freight until 1971. Hoedekenskerke was a key transfer point where agricultural products were loaded onto ships. In autumn especially, extra trains ran packed with sugar beets, earning the nickname 'Sukerpee-Express'. Since 1972, the Goes-Borsele Steam Train Foundation has offered tourist rides along part of the old route. A wonderful nostalgic journey through the Zak van Zuid-Beveland.
