The Standard-Tree Orchard at Zwaakse Weel

About this location

The Standard-Tree Orchard at Zwaakse Weel Just out of sight of the main road, near the Natuurmonumenten information point at Zwaakse Dijk, a special standard-tree orchard lies hidden away. Several varieties of apples, pears and mirabelle plums grow here. The orchard sits along the Zwaakse Weel trail, and walkers are welcome to stroll through it — and when the fruit is ripe, to pick some for personal use. Standard-tree orchards have become increasingly rare in recent decades. Modern low-growing orchards are more efficient: faster fruit production and easier maintenance. Standard trees grow more slowly, need more space and create a distinctive landscape with their robust trunks and wild, spreading crowns. But these orchards offer much more than fruit production: they support biodiversity, preserve rare varieties and offer real recreational value. Natuurmonumenten and the Zeeland Landscape Management Foundation are committed to maintaining and restoring these trees — keeping this orchard as living heritage, rooted in landscape, seasons and Zeeland's rich fruit-growing tradition.
