Hellenburg Castle

About this location
Hellenburg Castle In Baarland, two medieval castles once stood: the Hellenburg and Slot Baarland. What do they have to do with the sweet and salty flavours of Zeeland? In the late Middle Ages, castles were often among the first places to have an orchard or kitchen garden. On Zuid-Beveland alone, more than 25 castles once stood. Of the Hellenburg, only the foundations remain — uncovered after the devastating flood of 1953. They lie hidden in a small nature reserve along the Hellenburgstraat, where a walking path leads past the ruins and the outlines of the keep, corner towers and walls are still recognisable. Slot Baarland, nearby, was likely built in the 13th century by the Van Renesse family. It grew into a full castle but fell into disrepair after the Eighty Years' War. In the 18th century an estate was created, and around 1960 the castle was largely reconstructed — though it's not easy to see from the public road. Two lost or risen castles, recalling the rich history of Baarland and its early fruit-growing heritage.
