Nehalennia Temple, Colijnsplaat

About this location

In Colijnsplaat harbour stands a replica Roman temple (built 2005), evoking the real harbour that once existed here.

Around 200 AD the port of Ganuenta lay in the Eastern Scheldt, from which ships sailed to Britannia loaded with pottery, wine, grain and precious salt. Merchants made offerings to Nehalennia, protector of seafaring and trade, and placed votive altars on their safe return.

Between 1970 and 1974, more than 300 altars and votive stones were recovered from the nearby seabed.
