Agricultural Harbour Kats

About this location

The name reveals the original purpose. Without good road connections, the Agricultural Harbour of Kats was an indispensable link: ships came and went with sugar beet, potatoes and grain.

Noord-Beveland is still nicknamed Peeland — after the large quantities of sugar beet harvested here. The island had seven agricultural harbours; this was one of them.

The arrival of dams, bridges and better roads gradually made the harbour obsolete. What remained is the location: open, wide and directly on the Eastern Scheldt.
