The Zandkreek Dam and rope culture mussels

About this location

The Zandkreek Dam is a familiar landmark, but its history is long. Plans to connect Walcheren, Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland date back to the 19th century.

After the 1953 floods the plan became reality as part of the Delta Works. The dam was built in 1959-1960, at the spot where tidal currents of the Eastern Scheldt and the Veerse Gat once met. The N256 road now runs across it.

Right next to the dam, black buoys dot the water: these mark lines of rope-culture mussels in the Veerse Meer. Unlike bottom-culture mussels, these hang from ropes freely in the water without touching the seabed.
