Cycling along the edge of the world – that is what the Panorama Route offers. This 64 km route crosses West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, linking the wide Westerschelde estuary with the quiet hinterland: open polders, historic fortifications, creaking windmills and the salty air of the North Sea.
The route starts and ends in Breskens, the small harbour town at the mouth of the Westerschelde. From here you cycle through a landscape that changes with the seasons: in spring the orchards around Groede turn pink and white, in summer the grain fields stretch out to the horizon, and in autumn migrating birds swarm over the Verdronken Zwarte Polder.
A special highlight is Waterdunen, a groundbreaking nature development project where former farmland has been returned to the tides. The area attracts spoonbills, avocets and terns and offers a unique view over a tidal creek landscape just behind the Zeeland coast.
You will also ride through the picturesque villages of Groede, Nieuwvliet, Cadzand and the historic fortified village of Retranchement, which still retains its original ground plan. Along the way you pass medieval windmills, hidden polder churches and viewpoints over the Westerschelde and the North Sea. At Cadzand-Bad you can stop for a walk along the beach or a look at the marina.
The Panorama Route is signposted and follows the Zeeland cycling node network, so with a map or the route card at zeeland.com you will always find your way. A GPX file is available for use on your GPS or smartphone.
