Watersnoodmuseum

The Great Flood of 1953 marked a turning point in Zeeland and the Netherlands’s existence. Large tracts of land were inundated by floodwaters, causing the loss of many thousands of lives and devastating many villages. It led to the construction of the Delta Works, culminating in the dramatic Oosterscheldekering, the Netherlands’ biggest storm surge barrier.

The interactive exhibition at the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk tells the compelling story of Zeeland’s struggle against the sea. Discover how this battle was won with eye-catching displays, scale models and hands-on activities, which explain to young and old alike the importance of water management to the Netherlands.
