Seaweed Farm

At the foot of the Oosterscheldekering — once called the 'eighth wonder of the world' during its construction — the Oosterscheldeboulevard begins, running along the coast of Noord- and Zuid-Beveland. Until the end of 2025, a special seaweed farm run by the Seaweed Company was located in the Jacobahaven. The seaweed grew in the water beneath floating barrels. However, making a seaweed farm economically viable has so far proven difficult to achieve.
More than 220 species of seaweed grow in the Oosterschelde. That's remarkable, because seaweed is seen as an important part of the future food system. It grows in the sea and needs no farmland. It also contains protein and plenty of minerals, and can serve as a plant-based meat substitute. That makes seaweed an interesting and sustainable product.
Anyone who thinks seaweed is only for restaurants is mistaken. It's processed into ice cream, chocolate milk, bread, sweets and soy sauce, among other things. Agar agar, a plant-based gelling agent, is also made from seaweed. Even products like shampoo, lipstick and paint can contain seaweed-based ingredients.
Seaweed is therefore not just nature, but also a surprising raw material for the future.
