With the sweet flavours of Zeeland, we want to show that apples and pears cannot be captured in generalities. Variety, taste, harvest time and cultivation method all make a difference. Yet we rarely see what comes before fruit arrives in the shop.
At Slabbekoorn Fruit, Martijn and Jessica Slabbekoorn know all about that. They are the sixth generation of fruit growers; fruit DNA runs in the family. Their farm covers around 70 hectares in Eversdijk and Kruiningen. About 70 per cent is pears, with Conference as the main variety; the rest are apples, mainly Elstar.
Innovation is a key word. Weather stations predict disease pressure, GPS-guided spraying technology and crop sensors ensure targeted treatment. Drones, robots and modern picking machines are also used.
Martijn and Jessica are among the pioneers in Zeeland. Their apples and pears can be found in the vending machine — which they prefer to call a vitamin carousel — supplemented with seasonal fruit and honey from their own orchard.
