Boonman Winery

About this location

In an authentic Zeeland farmhouse barn in Nieuwdorp, the Boonman family works with the other black gold of Zeeland: blackcurrants. Zuid-Beveland is the heartland of Dutch blackcurrant growing — a remarkable 75% of the entire national harvest comes from the municipality of Borsele, mainly around Lewedorp and Nieuwdorp. Blackcurrants grow in clusters on bushes and are now machine-harvested. Their flavour is intense: sweet and tart at the same time, with a slightly bitter and spiced edge. Best known as the base for cassis, they are also turned into jam, chutney, liqueur, wine, beer and fruit yoghurt. Their natural pectin content also makes them ideal for jam-making. In the Boonman winery you can buy a variety of special blackcurrant products, made without artificial fragrances, colourings or flavourings. Once a year the family organises the blackcurrant cycling tour, on the Saturday after Ascension Day — a great chance to discover the region, the crop and the special products up close.
