Oosterschelde Museum

About this location

In the scent of salty air, right in the heart of Yerseke, lies the Oosterscheldemuseum. Yerseke is the beating heart of shellfish and crustacean cultivation in Northwest Europe. The museum tells the story of mussels, oysters and lobsters, and of the people who have worked here for generations with knowledge, tradition and craftsmanship.

Old tools, models, photographs and objects bring history to life. You discover how ships bring in their mussels, how oysters purify in the pits, and how the conditions of the Eastern Scheldt — salinity, currents, tides and seabed — influence flavour. From catch to plate: mussels as black gold, oysters as Zeeland pearls and the Eastern Scheldt lobster as the aristocrat of the sea.

The story of the drowned Reimerswaal also comes to life, complete with a scale model and virtual reality. A wonderful museum about water, craftsmanship, flavour and the salty history of Zeeland.
