Kamperland
Kamperland is the largest place on the island of Noord-Beveland. As years went past, it grew from an agricultural village to a touristic one. It is especially well liked by water sport enthusiasts. The Uithaven Kamperland is a popular marina, right in the centre and within easy walking distance of everything.
Campen
The previous occupant of its location was the parish of Campen, which was washed away by a series of floods in the 16th century. When this island was reclaimed again, Kamperland rose, albeit in an unplanned way. It just sort of grew, outwards from the central Veerweg, which explains why it has a less rectangular shape than other villages there.
Inland inlets
A special feature of Noord-Beveland and other islands in Zeeland are the inland inlets (‘inlagen’) which lie landside of the sea dike. They are small, secondary polders in areas vulnerable to sea flooding. They arose principally during land excavation of fields to build additional dikes in the polder. Now they are marshes, much loved by birds of many varieties.
Biking route
The 32-km Discover Noord-Beveland route will introduce you to all the island’s villages and ‘inlagen’.
Kamperland and surroundings
Lying directly on the Veerse lake, Kamperland is opposite the town of Veere. The old agricultural harbour has been converted to a modem marina, with 140 berths and all facilities. If you moor there, you’ll be just a short walk from a good range of shops and restaurants. You won’t be alone: thanks to the welcome the village gives to visitors, there are plenty of bungalow parks and camp sites around.
Brewery
On Kamperland you’ll find the island’s very own Zeeland brewery, Bierbrouwerij Emelisse. Wander inside to inspect the brew kettles, then sit on the terrace for a quick instant quality control, and a good menu. Visits and tastings can be booked in advance.
Oosterschelde barrier
On wheels, you’re only five minutes away from the Oosterschelde barrier. It was the closing link in the vast Delta Works, intended to prevent any repetition of the flood disaster of 1953. At the Deltapark Neeltje Jans you’ll find displays and explanations about the disaster and the Delta Works, as well as a water play area and an aquarium. Fancy a rest in the sun? The seals can show you how: the best is to go out on the excursion boat to see them sunning themselves on the sandbanks and then come back and try yourself.
Summer market
The annual summer market in Kamperland is a showcase for artisans to display their crafts, and costume lovers theirs. These and other activities are listed on our Events Calendar.
