The 10 best days out in Zeeland

Written by: Zeeland.com

Zeeland is great at any time of year! That’s no less true in autumn. In the outdoors, nature can be enjoyed to the full, but there are plenty of fantastic indoor activities to discover too. Curious to know what Zeeland has in store this autumn? Let’s give you some inspiration ...

1. Visit a brewery

Zeelanders are outstanding brewers! Whether you’re looking for special beers, wines, homemade gins or natural syrups, you’ll find many craft breweries, wineries and distillers here. Take, for example, the Kees brewery in Middelburg, or producers of The Holy Spiritus in Sint Jansteen. If you’re close to Goes, visit the Slot Oostende brewery and sample a tipple or two. Do you prefer a bit of winetasting? Then don’t miss out on a visit to De Kleine Schorre winery in Dreischor. Remember to book ahead.

2. A walk in the woods

Where better to discover the warm and uplifting colours of autumn than in the forest? Exceptional flora, undulating dunescapes with sandhills, hollows and dunefields; their proximity to the coast creates unique contrasts in the landscape. Keep a tally of all the warm autumn colours and countless mushrooms you see and you’ll begin to realise how memorable this really is!

Along the coast are the forested areas of Oranjebos and Westerschouwen, the biggest forest in Zeeland, and the Clingse woods with their unique vegetation are definitely worth seeing! Other forests in Zeeland are unmissable too.

3. Discover the world of mushrooms

In September, wild mushrooms start appearing in all shapes, sizes and colours. Curious to know how many types of mushroom there are? The Gadra woods between Renesse and Burgh-Haamstede are justly renowned for their mushrooms and offer the perfect spot for a mushroom hunt! You can find more information and tips here.

4. Visit a museum

Zeeland has an plethora of museums: anything from historical, to entertaining, hands-on museums. Want to know more about Zeeland’s history without all the stuffy details? Then why not visit the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg? Other recommendations include the Watersnoodmuseum (flood museum) in Ouwerkerk, the Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland (maritime museum) in Vlissingen, Sjakie’s Chocolademuseum (chocolate museum) in Middelburg and the Industrieel Museum Zeeland (industrial museum) in Sas van Gent.

5. Deer-spotting

Have you ever stared a roe or fallow deer in the eye? If not, there’s every reason to visit Zeeland’s forests! The best time to catch sight of red deer is in September and October. During the rutting season they reveal themselves more often. Listen out for a deep, heavy baying sound, because there’s a good chance that’s the bugling (mating call) of a red deer. Roe and fallow deer also come out, but more often in the mornings and evenings. Find out the best places to spot a roe or fallow deer.

6. Go bargain-hunting

Not perhaps everyone’s cup of tea, but for lovers of antiques and other curiosa, street markets are a real gold mine. This autumn various markets are being organised, so pencil them in your diary! More information on dates and places can be found on the websites meukisleuk.nl and rommelmarktvandaag.nl.
