Brouwersdam
Brouwersdam is one of Zeeland’s hotspots. This 6.5-kilometre-long dam links the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. On the landward side is the Grevelingen lagoon, and on the seaward side, the North Sea, so on either side of Brouwersdam, there are plenty of opportunities for water sports and other recreational activities. Water sports
Close to the North Sea beaches and Grevelingenmeer, Brouwersdam is the ideal spot for lovers of surfing, sailing and diving. The seaward side attracts kite-surfing enthusiasts. Windsurfers, on the other hand, prefer Grevelingenmeer, the largest freshwater lagoon in Europe.
All kinds of water sports are possible, from windsurfing, diving and paddleboarding, to canoeing and sailing until the sun goes down. Want to know more about water sports in Zeeland?
Brouwersdam water jump
Brouwersdam is also home to the Waterjump. The name says it all: from here you can jump into the water. It’s worth remembering however, it’s an 8-metre drop, along a 25-metre ramp! The water jump is a favourite launching pad for many a kite surfer, but anyone can try, with or without a mat. Take jaw-dropping leaps. Test your limits. If you’re not such a dare-devil, you can, of course, just watch. There are more than enough bravehearts willing to show off their skills!
Beach sports
If you’re not into water sports, but still like the thrills and spills, there are events’ organisers who can rent you equipment for beach sports, such as beach volleyball or beach soccer. Tournaments are regularly organised at Brouwersdam.
Another fun activity on the beach is land sailing. With this form of sailing, you likewise tackle the elements, but without getting wet!
Beach pavilions at Brouwersdam
There are a number of beach pavilions at Brouwersdam. The most well-known are Beachclub Perry's, Natural High and Strandclub Zee. Brush off the sand, plonk yourself down on one of the lounge sofas and enjoy a well-earned drink and a bite to eat. Here, no one is in a rush. Just let the sun do its work, while you enjoy doing absolutely nothing! Many beach pavilions organise their own events, for example, parties with a DJ, and yoga plus breakfast. Beach pavilions are a great place to rest and relax at any time of year.
Festivals at Brouwersdam
Listening to music while the sun goes down. Brouwersdam forms the backdrop for the Concert at Sea festival. Its once humble origins, as a tribute to the Zeeland band Bløf, are now a distant memory and the festival now attracts tens of thousands of visitors from far and wide every year. Beachboom is another festival that takes place annually at Brouwersdam. This beach festival has three stages and includes several different genres, such as House, 90s and Party. With the sand between your toes, the wind in your hair and the salt spray on your lips, festivals at Brouwersdam are always great fun!
Nature reserves
Close to Brouwersdam, there are several designated nature reserves. For example, you can discover the wildlife haven of De Punt, either on foot or by bike. Marvel at the view from the observation hide in the woods. Or simply enjoy the sun, sea and beach. Fine walks can also be made at the Kabbelaarsbank nature reserve. From here, there are glimpses of the Grevelingen lagoon and many bird species are also on view. In particular, the area around Goeree-Overflakkee is well known for its many creeks and diverse fauna and flora.
Seal spotting
Brouwersdam is also a good spot for some wildlife-spotting. Close-by, there are colonies of seals. You can always spot one or two on the seaward side of the dam. Now and again, their heads will pop up above the surface and it’s as though they’ve come to observe you, with their Argus eyes. Sometimes (young) seals can get lost or get injured. The A Seal sanctuary takes them in and nurses them back to good health before they are released again on the beaches at Renesse or Ouddorp.
