Oranjezon

What makes Oostkapelle so special?

Without doubt, Oostkapelle is one of the most beautiful spots in Walcheren. Not only is it a delightful village, it also has magnificent beaches, an extensive range of dunes and some spectacular nature reserves. But what really makes Oostkapelle so special? Find out for yourself!

Oranjezon

Between Oostkapelle and Vrouwenpolder is Oranjezon, once used as a catchment area for the storage of drinking water. It is now a wonderful wildlife haven comprising dunes, scrubland and a mix of coniferous and deciduous woodland. There are no fewer than five trails which criss-cross the reserve. Along one of these routes is a viewing platform from where you can take in the surroundings. It’s not uncommon to come across roe and fallow deer on one of these walks, as well as wild Konik ponies. These animals ensure that the whole area remains open terrain, creating spaces for all kinds of flowers and plants to grow. Be aware that dogs and cyclists are not permitted in the nature reserve. The flying of drones is likewise not allowed. Nature lovers in Zeeland should make a beeline for this reserve for which there is an entry fee of €1.

Kasteel Westhove

It’s obvious to see that Kasteel Westhove was once a powerful stronghold. Voted one of the best five in the Netherlands, this castle is mentioned in historical documents that date back to 1277. With its barbican and main keep, not much is left of the medieval castle: its moats, castle walls, bridges, gates and tower have largely disappeared. Nevertheless, there’s still plenty to fire the imagination. Parts of the walls and towers are still visible and give the place a special aura. It’s even possible to stay overnight! Most of the castle can be accessed and in the former orangery of the castle is the Terra Maris museum. Read more here.

Terra Maris

Terra Maris, which literally means ‘land of the sea’, is the number one museum for nature and landscape in Zeeland. Here, you can discover how wind, water and man have helped form the landscapes of Zeeland. A 2.5-hectare landscape garden forms part of the museum, giving you a real taste of the different elements of the Zeeland countryside. Kids can catch small aquatic animals with the aid of nets and maps, or climb to the top of the motte. Don’t forget to combine your trip with a visit to the museum café and the museum shop. All in all, it’s a great place to suit all ages. The orangery of Kasteel Westhove houses Terra Maris, an interactive natural history museum, which provides an insight into the varied landscapes of Zeeland. Behind the museum is a 2.5-hectare landscape garden. In the museum itself, there is a multifaceted exhibition about Zeeland’s natural history. The museum also regularly organises nature-themed activities for kids.

De Manteling

De Manteling in Walcheren is a diversified stretch of coastline in Zeeland. It consists of woodland, dunes, green avenues and winding paths. It is one of the few places where you can see how the dunes have formed and change naturally over time. There are various trails that take you to spectacular outdoor settings, such as Berkenbosch and Duinbeek, where the well-to-do once spent their summers. These are now managed by the Dutch forestry commission and are a joy to behold, even today. Nature lovers will not leave De Manteling disappointed!

One of Zeeland’s cleanest beaches

The beaches at Oostkapelle are not just beautiful, they have often been voted the cleanest beaches in the Netherlands. There are also sections of beach where dogs, as long as they are on the lead, are allowed all year round. The beach at Berkenbos is known as being the best dog-friendly beach in Walcheren. In Strandcafé bij Karel they even sell dog beer! So now, you and your footed-friend can enjoy a glass of beer together on the beach. The best thing about the beaches at Oostkapelle is that you can combine them with a visit to the De Manteling nature reserve, which lies behind the dunes. Have you put Oostkapelle on your list of places to visit yet?
