About this route

A 78 km bike route through the farmland of Tholen and Sint Philipsland. Each farm has its own information board. Along the way, a wealth of Zeeuws cultural history awaits you, ready to be learnt.

Tholen is a place of peace. Endless polders are the backdrop for your bike, the vibrant colours of flower meadows all around. Sturdy-looking farms are the intervals in the landscape, some of them looking pretty ancient…

Historical farms have a peculiar farm yard layout, with a pigsty, wagon stables and a bakehouse. The detailing on sheds and houses is very interesting too: look out for intriguing symbols.

Description

Tholen
The island of Tholen is the result of centuries of struggle against the unpredictable water. Five polders were merged into one island, which remained isolated for a long time – it was not until 1928 that the first connection to the mainland was made. The island is known for its flower-seed cultivation, mainly found in the western part. Outside the dykes, mudflats and salt marshes provide resting places for many different bird species.

Sint Philipsland
Sint Philipsland is characterised by its vast open landscape and above all its peace and quiet. In the 15th century, Anna of Burgundy took the initiative to embank a stretch of salt marsh between the Slaak and the Zijpe and founded the village of Sint Philipsland, naming it after her father Philip the Good. A century later the island disappeared beneath the waves, only to be re-embanked in the 17th century. In 1847 the Anna Jacobapolder was also enclosed, further expanding the island.
