From oysters to Zeeland wine and from sea purslane to Zeeland fruit
Get on your bike and discover the salty and sweet flavours of the Bevelanden. Look, listen, smell, touch and taste. Smaek van Zeêland and local entrepreneurs invite you to explore lesser-known regions of Zeeland: Noord- and Zuid-Beveland. They live and work in a flavourful (sea)scape where land and water meet. This salty-sweet landscape is steeped in culinary history that tells stories of the world as it once was.
This part of Zuid-Beveland, with Yerseke as the centre of shellfish and mollusc cultivation, is unmistakably salty above all. In Yerseke you'll find the famous oyster reservoirs, harbours full of mussel and oyster boats, and numerous businesses that live from the sea. Here you'll even find the world's only mussel vending machine. And the Mosselman? He naturally lives in Yerseke too. And don't forget: there's also a vineyard.
Hard to believe, but until well into the nineteenth century Yerseke was a farming village. The Yerseke Moer, just outside the village, still bears the traces of centuries of peat extraction and today forms a remarkable natural and cultural landscape. On this route too, the Eastern Scheldt boulevard offers the finest panoramas. And if you ride a few kilometres further, you'll find yourself on the banks of the Western Scheldt.
Around Kruiningen and along the Canal through Zuid-Beveland you'll find fruit shops and stalls where the sweet story of the Bevelanden continues, with products that follow the seasons and come straight from the land.
Check the opening hours of the participating businesses in advance. Enjoy your ride!
